Operation Mentawai and Merapi
The rescue and recovery operation of GRN in Wasior has not finished, yet we were surprised by two natural disasters in the other side of the country, the eruption of volcanic Mount Merapi and tsunami that hit Mentawai Islands. GRN immediately divided its operational focus to the other two areas.
On October 27th, one day after the tsunami, GRN Padang lead by Desco and Kibe landed in Sikakap, Mentawai and conducted early assessment and evacuation procedure in Malakopa and Mutai. The next Saturday, October 29th, the team reached Pasar Puat Village inhabited by 580 people that had not received any kind of aid yet.
Up to this date, the Mentawai team has done some evacuation efforts and first medical aids to the tsunami victims in the villages along the coast line of North and South Pagai Sub Districts. On October 29th, the team arrived in Betu Monga and Sibeu Gunggung Villages in North Pagai, where 43 people were declared lost. At that day, the team only found 5 corpses. By October 30th, Lody Korua joined the team with some emergency goods, medical supplies, rubber rafts and 4×4 vehicles.
Meanwhile, led by Djadjo ( Dondy Rahardjo) and supported by medical teams from Yarsi, Rescue Paiton and Newmont; GRN in Merapi carried out mass medical examination in evacuation center in Ndeles Village, Kemalang and Klaten. The evacuees and affected villagers still need blankets, goggles, masks, women sanitary napkins, baby milk powder and baby foods. GRN evacuation center (Posko Merapi) that located about 5 km from Mount Merapi, was moved to Ngaglik Village (21 km from Mount Merapi), in Selo Sub District, Boyolali Regency when the eruption continued. It is now located in Lanud Adisuwarmo, the old airport at Boyolali.
Up to now, GRN is still gathering goods and raising funds. Cash donation can be transferred to BCA KCP M.Haryono to Global Rescue Network, acc. No. 7160050017 Swift Code: CENAIDJA. Goods aids can be sent to Jl. Gudang Peluru Barat Blok X no. 557, Kebon Baru, Tebet, Jakarta. Please call us first to get the latest information about goods needed by the people. If you give second-hands or used clothes, we would appreciate it if the clothes are in a good condition, cleanly washed and put in clear plastic wraps.
